I watched Game of Thrones before I started reading ASoIaF and found that all of the characters were really well done in the show. They're pretty much represented the way they are in the books (except that Catelyn is like 100x more crazy about Bran's accident in the book). The only character that seems completely different to me was Renly.

Game of Thrones T.V. Show vs. Book? Hey guys, I'm a big fan of the GoT TV show, and I'm thinking of reading the books too. My concern is whether or not they follow the same story line - I don't want to spoil the TV show because I read the books. Is there much risk in reading the books?

So season 4 dragged out the trial a lot, but imo was better as Peter Dinklages confession was amazing. The show had what Tyrion said and thought in the books had it be dialog in the show.
The books never outright state so, but Loras was Renly's squire and they spent a lot of time together. A few moments hint at their relationship, such as when Renly asks Loras to "pray" alone with him. Other characters who knew Renly well, like Stannis and Jaime, make remarks that hint at his homosexuality. For example Jaime telling Loras in

In the show, she needs to stand in, to some extent, for the entire Tyrell family, and the show needs to convey right away that this is a powerful and politically savvy family. The books can use five different secondary characters to get that point across, in the show Margaery and Loras together basically must represent all of House Tyrell.
The both show had a lot of fans. The both show were rated very high while the shows were going on. But, Breaking Bad objectively had a better ending/final season than Game of thrones. It was getting better and better when season was going on when it comes to Breaking Bad.
